How can I get my Microsoft Outlook to work?

I double click on the Microsoft Outlook icon and it says “Unable to open your default email folders” and it goes straight to “My Computer”. I chose a hotmail address as my email account but I tried sending an email to another address of mine but I did not receive it.
Please explain to me what I need to do to get this working in not so technical terms that will help me understand better. I don’t know what server and default means. Thanks.

Most people are not aware that Microsoft Outlook saves all the folders, journals, emails, notes, contacts and everything in files with .pst extension. The PST files are so fragile that they get corrupted very easily even with a sudden restart of a PC or by some malware that tries to get all your emails from it. Microsoft did not give any option to the user to recover lost, deleted or damaged Outlook PST files. But if you want to seriously repair your Microsoft Outlook then there are many software available online. Stellar Outlook PST Repair is one of the popular tools available at http://pcfix.110mb.com You can try a free demo and see if the software is able to repair your MS Outlook problem.

Outlook 2013 is pretty good in itself. Actually it looks quite beautiful. The problem however is not with the software but with the licensing. The new Microsoft license only allows to install this product for the lifetime of the computer. Meaning that if you decide to sell your computer 2 weeks from now, you will not be able to transfer Outlook license to your new computer. In essence, every time you get a new computer you will have to purchase a new license. I have overlooked this detail. I am selling my computer in few months and this means that I have pretty much thrown away $100.

When you’re dealing with Microsoft there is always a gotcha. Wanted an on board e-mail program, one that would automatically download messages and save them on my computer. Free Thunderbird was ok, but I had issues with controlling font sizes and displaying images. Had Home & Student Office 2010 legally installed on computer. Bought Outlook thinking it would be compatible, it’s not. Had to download Trial Version of Office 2013. Don’t know what will happen when trial runs out. Outlook has many controls buried way down in menus. One thing I do not like is that if you are viewing a message and you delete it, Outlook does not then display the next message. It goes back to the inbox and you have to double click to view another message full screen. As with Microsoft every time you get a new version of something it’s like learning a new language. Just finding out how to set up a distribution list was exhausting. Nothing is intuitive.

Had to get this to “collect” all my many mail messages from different platforms over 15 years of emailing. Still there were some things that the 2013-version incredibly could not do for me like importing from some of the older Microsoft outlook versions . Microsoft – that’s a fail. Happy that I know a lot about software and could find some good free tools on the web to do the job, but few would be able to do the same. Unless you have an immediate upgrade path from the last couple of versions of outlook you may end up in trouble. As a mail programme it gets the job done and it can handle a very large database with mails. But its not a revelation in emailing. And for the price I can only give it two stars when I consider that I have done very well with free mail programmes for the last 4 years.
