One weekend in, the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus are in high demand. Apple says preorders for the smartphones, which began Saturday, are “on pace” to beat the first-weekend sales record (10 million) set last year by the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. This data point is a bit different than the PR strategy Apple took last time around, when the company boasted about 4 million preorders in 24 hours. Nonetheless, Apple describes consumer interest in its latest handsets as “exceptionally strong.” One large reason for that is the fact that Apple is releasing the iPhone 6S in China on day one this year; in 2015, China wasn’t included as a launch country for the iPhone 6.
The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus will launch on September 25th, and though their outward design is largely unchanged, both phones include new features like 3D Touch, an improved camera, and faster performance. This year, Apple is offering a new rose gold color, which was the first to sell out for in-store reservations; if you buy one online at this point, you’re unlikely to receive it by launch. “We are working to catch up as quickly as we can, and we will have iPhone 6S Plus as well as iPhone 6S units available at Apple retail stores when they open next Friday,” Apple said in its statement.
