Instagram is about to become more like parent company Facebook by swapping chronological feeds for algorithmic ones.

In a blog post, the photo network confirmed that it will allow “popular” images and videos the user is likely to be interested in to float to the top.

Instagram said that it felt the change was needed because users are missing out “70% of their feeds” on average.

As well as bringing the service in line with Facebook, the shift is similar to Twitter’s move towards algorithmic timelines.

The microblogging service was hit by a user backlash when it announced the change, which is probably why it’s entirely optional.

Don’t expect to see the changes hit Instagram right away. The company is gradually phasing them in and monitoring feedback before moving ahead with a global rollout.
