It feels like every recent Instagram change has been geared towards challenging Snapchat, but the photo-sharing app today announced changes which put it in line with its parent Facebook.
The company is refreshing its comment section to allow users the option to like comments, turn off commenting on certain posts, and even remove followers without employing the block button.
In a blog post announcing the move, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom said implementing the like tool will help users “show support and encourage… positivity throughout the community”.
Throwing a “like” onto someone’s comment will follow the same rules as liking regular posts – you simply tap the heart icon next to it. And so you can follow the crowd and know which comments to like, a counter will be displayed underneath.
Instagram knows not everyone is out there hurling likes and love within the platform’s comment section, though.
That’s why it’s also introducing the option to completely disable comments on specific posts – finally adding a feature which has been present on certain verified accounts for some time.
This can be achieved by venturing into ‘advanced settings’ before uploading a post.
And if you’ve been craving a way to remove a follower without blocking them, now you can. Well, as long as you’re running a private account.
If you want to do them the common courtesy of telling them, you’ll need to do it in real life – the person you removed won’t be notified if you remove them as a follower.
The changes will roll out from Tuesday, though this will take the usual couple of weeks to show up for absolutely everybody.
