From the iPhone 8 to Note 8, these are the best phones worth waiting for

Written by

2016 was a great year for smartphones. With Samsung, OnePlus and Apple all throwing their handsets in the ring, it was the best year yet – with fantastic innovations and upgrades to our favourite smartphones. Others, like HTC, Huawei, LG and Lenovo made some standout handsets too, but there’s going to be even more great smartphones in the latter half of 2017. Here’s a heads up of what’s to come.

In the last few months alone, we’ve seen Samsung’s Galaxy S8, Sony’s Xperia XZ Premium, HTC’s U11 and the fantastic OnePlus 5, but there are still several phones we’re still itching to see.

Below, you’ll find our curated list of the best upcoming smartphones in 2017, with official release dates, details and pricing where possible. Obviously, if no such information exists, we’ll divulge in a healthy bit of educated guesswork, and report on any internet rumblings. This article will be updated as and when new information comes to fruition.

Here’s our list of the best upcoming smartphones in 2017

Upcoming smartphones 2017: The release dates you NEED to know

  • iPhone 8 – September 2017 TBC
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 8 – August 2017 TBC
  • Motorola Moto Z 2017 – mid 2017 TBC
  • Google Pixel 2 – Q4 2017 TBC

Upcoming smartphones in 2017: The handsets to wait for

1. Apple iPhone 8

Firstly, there’s Apple. The iPhone 7 was a quality smartphone, but it was overshadowed by the deliberate omission of the headphone jack for the first time.

We’re hoping that the ‘s’ version of the iPhone puts things right, but it’s very early to tell at the moment. There are rumours of wireless charging and an OLED screen for the first time, but so far it looks like anyone wishing for the headphone jack to return will be disappointed.

We likely won’t see it until September 2017 though, so you’ve got a long wait ahead of you if your handset simply must have an Apple logo on it.

2. Samsung Galaxy Note 8

You’d have thought that given the last Note device was a touch more flammable than ideal that Samsung would think twice about coming up with a follow up anytime soon. You’d think wrong. The Note 8 will be here this year, and early leaks suggest good things.

Not only will the S-Pen return, but you’re supposedly looking at a 4K screen (all the better for Gear VR, my dear), a dual lens camera, and Samsung’s Infinity display, first seen on the Galaxy S8 – only this time, it’s going to be bigger. Think 6.2in plus…

3. Motorola Moto Z2 (2017)

Not a great deal is known about the future of Lenovo’s top-end Moto range, but the Moto Z was the first hard proof we’ve seen that modular handsets have a future. The MotoMods just clip on and work: whether they’re an extended battery, or an external speaker.

The good news is that it looks like Lenovo are sticking to their guns. The company says they’re looking to make at least 12 mods per year. And they’re supposed to be forwards compatible too: “Moto Mods developed today are designed to work with future generations of Moto Z phones,” the company wrote in June, so feel free to buy now if you’re happy to commit to the Lenovo ecosystem.

There are very good reasons to look forward to a new Google Pixel – chief among them is that eight months after launch, its camera still has not been bettered in our eyes.

From what we’ve heard so far, the next Pixel is likely to be waterproof with all the improvements to performance you’d expect – as well as a bump to the original’s 1080p resolution. Unfortunately, a slimmer frame may see it going the way of the iPhone 7 and losing the 3.5mm headphone jack.
