Moto Z Play debuts alongside Hasselblad True Zoom Moto Mod

The wave of announcements at IFA continues with Lenovo and Motorola, who are announcing a new handset and a fresh Moto Mod module.

First up, the Moto Z Play is the latest addition to the Moto Z family. It’s got a 5.5-inch 1920×1080 Super AMOLEd display and a 5-megapixel camera on its face, and there’s a 16-megapixel snapper around back.

Inside the Moto Z Play’s shell — which has an aluminum frame and glass back — there’s an octa-core Snapdragon 625 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a microSD slot for adding more storage, and a 3,510mAh battery that Motorola says is good for up to 50 hours of mixed use. The bottom of the Moto Z Play is home to a USB Type-C port as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack, the latter of which is missing from the Moto Z and Moto Z Force.

Like the Moto Z and Moto Z Force, the Moto Z Play will initially be a Verizon exclusive in the U.S. It’ll be available for pre-order from Motorola and Verizon starting on Sept. 8. Folks on GSM carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile will be able to get an unlocked Moto Z Play and Moto Z from Motorola in October.

As for pricing, Verizon will as $17 per month, or $408 total, for the Moto Z Play Droid Edition. The unlocked GSM Moto Z will be priced at $699.99, while the unlocked Moto Z Play will be $449.99.

Moto also introduced its latest Moto Mod today. The Hasselblad True Zoom is a camera attachment that includes features like a 10x optical zoom, Xenon flash, OIS for stills and EIS for video, and a physical shutter button.

The Hasselblad True Zoom will be available globally starting in September. Pre-orders in the U.S. will begin Sept. 8, with a launch scheduled for Sept. 15. As for pricing, the Hasselblad True Zoom will be €299 in Europe, $249.99 from Verizon, and $299 from Motorola in the U.S.
